Katie Couric + Sesame Street
In 1998, Katie Couric lost her husband Jay Monahan to colon cancer. Her young daughters also lost their father. Since his death, Couric has been a tireless advocate for colon cancer awareness. Recently Katie partnered with Sesame Street in an important project to help children better understand death.
The following video is a preview of the prime time Sesame Street episode, When Families Grieve, that features Couric, Elmo, and other muppets. The project is designed to be a resource to families in this most difficult time.
Couric talked with Dr. Jeannette Beatncourt, around the launch of this project, about the difficulty of helping children cope with the death of a parent and the importance of finding the right way to communicate about what death means.
Tomorrow on the blog we will feature clips of Elmo and his cousin Jessie that are part of the project.
